Awarded: Medal “In Commemoration of the 300th Anniversary of St. Petersburg”; Honorary Badge “For Merits in the Development of the Olympic Movement in Russia”; Medal “Honorary Lesgaftite”; Diploma and commemorative medal of the President of the Russian Federation for significant contribution to the preparation and holding of the XXII Olympic Winter Games and XI Paralympic Winter Games 2014 in Sochi.

The National State University of Physical Culture, Sports and Health named after P.F. Lesgafta in 2021 will celebrate the 125th anniversary of its foundation. Since the opening of the Higher Courses for Teachers and Heads of Physical Education, an outstanding scientist and teacher Pyotr Frantsevich Lesgaft, a glorious path has been passed to the level of a modern multidisciplinary educational institution of higher education of the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation.

Now the University is the leading sports educational institution in the country. The educational process, scientific research, sports training are carried out here, a policy in the field of physical culture and sports is formed. From the walls of the University, not only world-class athletes graduate but also high-class patriots. More than 700 teachers and students of the institute in the first days of the Great Patriotic War, together with the director I.I. Nikiforov volunteered for the Red Army, partisan detachments, and the people’s militia.

For their heroism and courage in battles against the German invaders during the Great Patriotic War, the title of Hero of the Soviet Union was awarded to Lesgaftans: student of the higher school of trainers, skier Klavdia Nazarova, commissar of the regiment Dmitry Balakhanov, champion of the USSR in ski racing Vladimir Myagkov, graduate of the higher school of trainers Kuvika Ivan Ivanovich.

For his enormous contribution to military training and assistance to the front in the Great Patriotic War on April 16, 1942, by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, the Leningrad State Order of Lenin Institute of Physical Culture named after V.I. P.F. Lesgaft was awarded the Order of the Battle Red Banner. This is the only domestic civilian university awarded with a military order.

UNIVERSITY today is 5 institutes, 9 faculties, 39 departments, 3 higher schools of coaches

More than 400 employees of the teaching staff of them: 157 people have scientific titles, 244 people have scientific degrees, 79 people have sports qualifications and honorary sports titles, 6 Olympic champions, 28 Honored trainers of the USSR and Russia, 17 judges of the international category, 1 honored Scientist of Russia, 1 Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Education, 11 Honored Workers of Higher Education of the Russian Federation, 15 Honored Workers of Physical Culture of the Russian Federation, 1 Honored Teacher of Russia, 1 Honored Worker of Culture of the Russian Federation, 18 Honorary Workers of VPO, 2 Hero of Russia, 1 Hero of Labor of Russia.

5840 students are currently studying at NSU im. P.F. Lesgaft, St. Petersburg.

The teachers working at the university have been honored with well-deserved sports and state awards. This is Egorova Lyubov Ivanovna – Hero of the Russian Federation, vice-rector for sports work, candidate of pedagogical sciences, six-time Olympic champion, Honored Master of Sports of the USSR;

Karelin Alexander Alexandrovich – Hero of the Russian Federation, Professor of the Department of Theory and Methods of Wrestling, Doctor of Pedagogy, Professor, three-time Olympic champion, Honored Master of Sports;

Viner-Usmanova Irina Aleksandrovna – Hero of Labor of the Russian Federation, Professor of the Department of Theory and Methods of Gymnastics, Doctor of Pedagogy, Associate Professor, Honored Trainer of Russia, Honored Worker of Higher School of the Russian Federation.

University graduate Rotenberg Arkady Romanovich, Doctor of Pedagogy, Honored Trainer, and Honored Worker of Physical Culture of the Russian Federation, was awarded the title of Hero of Labor of the Russian Federation in 2020.

Lesgaft residents are champions and prize-winners of the Olympic Games: 363 medals were won by university students, graduate students, and graduates, 186 of these awards are gold medals.

The University constantly conducts scientific research, which becomes the foundation in the development of physical culture and sports in Russia.

The university looks confidently to the future, follows the path of innovations in the best traditions of sports science and practice, laid down by P.F. Lesgaft.
